The Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS) is the British framework for children's learning and development from birth to age five. It sets out what young children should be learning and, just as importantly, how — mainly through guided play rather than formal lessons. Here's what it actually covers.
What EYFS actually is
EYFS was developed in the UK and is now followed by international schools and nurseries worldwide, including Kids First Nursery's Pre-Schoolers program in Abu Dhabi. Rather than a fixed syllabus, it's a developmental framework — it describes the skills and knowledge children typically build at each stage, and leaves the "how" to age-appropriate, play-based methods.
The areas of learning
EYFS organizes early learning into a small number of areas, split into two groups:
- Prime areas — communication and language, physical development, and personal, social and emotional development. These form the foundation everything else builds on.
- Specific areas — literacy, mathematics, understanding the world, and expressive arts and design. These build on the prime areas as a child gets older.
A strong EYFS nursery moves fluidly between these throughout the day — a sandpit activity might quietly cover physical development, mathematics (counting, measuring), and communication all at once.
How play-based learning fits in
EYFS is delivered mainly through play-based learning — child-led and adult-guided activities rather than desks and worksheets. This isn't "just playing": each activity is planned around what a specific age group is developmentally ready to learn, which is why the approach is often described as "developmentally appropriate."
Bilingual development within EYFS
EYFS is a framework, not a language requirement — it can be delivered in any language, or bilingually. At Kids First Nursery, the Pre-Schoolers program combines EYFS with bilingual development in English and Arabic, so children build both languages alongside the same core skills.
